Tranmere Rovers announce return of ex-Forest Green man Kaiyne Woolery

National League-threatened Tranmere Rovers, sitting 20th in League Two with only six points between them and the relegation spots, have announced the re-signing of free agent winger Kaiyne Woolery.

The London-born winger has also had a stint at Swindon Town and has been playing abroad since 2022.

Tranmere happen to be the last team he was with in the EFL, with Woolery spending the lockdown campaign of 2020/21 with them. In this time, he made 52 appearances and scored 11 goals, but will surely be eager to play in front of the Prenton Park fans this time around.

The now-31-year-old last played for Finnish outfit IF Gnistan. He left the United Kingdom in 2022 after a season-long stint with Motherwell in Scotland, and has since had spells at clubs in Turkey, Greece and Cyprus, as well as Finland.

He only joined Gnistan in January, after spending the previous six months without a club following his release from Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta at the end of last season, a season in which he only registered five appearances.

Even less minutes came to him in Finland; a mere one game in the Finnish League Cup was the biggest talking point of his short stay in Helsinki.

Woolery played for Mark Cooper’s Forest Green side that won promotion to League Two from the National League in 2017, scoring four times during his six-month loan spell from Wigan.

He only had two Rovers goals to his name going into the play-off final against Tranmere, of all teams, at Wembley, but doubled his tally when it mattered most.

His more notable stint in England was with Swindon Town, where he played 112 games over three seasons, scoring 14.

Tranmere are currently seven games without a win, losing six of them. Manager Peter Wild, who played his second game on Tuesday night against fellow-stragglers Harrogate Town, will surely be appreciative of any help his squad can get at this stage of the season.

Their next game comes against Swindon tomorrow (Saturday, March 20). Whether Woolery will be available to make the difference against his former club is yet to be seen, but it’s becoming a case of now or never for Tranmere Rovers.
