Gloucester Rugby have announced the signing of scrum-half Mike Austin who made two impactful appearances on loan from Hartpury RFC for the Cherry and Whites this season and will now join the club permanently this summer.
Austin, is an electric player who’s strength is moving the ball quickly with the added touch of a phenomenal box kick.
The 24-year-old has played 23 matches for Hartpury this season and scored 12 tries under head coach Mark Cornwell.
Praising Austin’s commitment to the game, Cornwell said, “We signed Mike (Austin) from Cinderford two years ago, and I think he’s probably missed two league games in that two-year period he’s been with us.
“He’s the type of player any coach wants on their side, he doesn’t like visiting the physio room, he just loves to train, he loves to be out there and loves to play.”
Austin has played for the Gloucestershire based side for two-years and has been one of the stand out players in the RFU Championship.
Reflecting on Austin’s development, he said, “He’s come on leaps and bounds in these two years, he’s arguably one of the best nines in the championship hence why Gloucester have picked him up.”
The Hartpury head coach believes that this will be a good signing for both clubs involved.
“I think it’s great for us that Mikey has made that step up and he’s going to go and put on the Cherry and White shirt, I’m sure he will do well,
“He’s still only a young lad and got a lot to learn, and who better than to learn off than players like Caolan Englefield and Tomos Williams.
“I think it’s great for him (Austin) as well. All the boys are happy, and we’re really happy that Mike’s made that step.
Despite leaving Cornwell and Hartpury, there is no hard feelings between the two parties.
Cornwell said: “In an ideal world, Mikey playing for Hartpury is great, but it’s what we do here. We develop individuals, and whether it’s Gloucester or wherever they go, it’s great to see them move on and improve and sort of start their careers, so to speak.”
Austin will sign alongside fellow championship player Hugh Bokenham who is joining from the Cornish Pirates.
These signings come after a devastating 19-player release haul announced by Gloucester yesterday.
