Hungary have qualified for Euro 2024, after a last-minute own goal against Bulgaria in Sofia on Thursday evening. This was the country’s first direct qualification for a tournament since the 1986 World Cup. Here is every Hungarian player who has played in the city of Cheltenham.
The only player who has played for a team in the region is Dénes Rósa. The midfielder, famous for playing for Ferencváros, enjoyed a brief loan spell from Wolves in 2007 at Cheltenham Town. He played 226 minutes in League One, making the starting eleven once under John Ward.
There are two Hungarian players in League One at the moment. Krisztián Hegyi kept a clean sheet against Cheltenham Town in Stevenage’s 3-0 win at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium, while Callum Styles was injured when Barnsley won away against the Robins this season.
The only other player to be included in a matchday squad and play at Whaddon Road was János Kovács, once in 2007 for Chesterfield in League One then for the second time for Hereford in 2011 in League Two. He played 90 minutes in both games and in 2011, he had an assist in his team’s 3-1 victory.
Ádám Bogdán could have played in goal against the Robins on multiple occasions, but he was never in the squad for a game against Cheltenham. While he was at Crewe Alexandra in 2012, he was with the team when Cheltenham Town was promoted to League One through winning the League Two play-offs Final.
Outside of Cheltenham, but in Gloucestershire, two players have played at The New Lawn against Forest Green Rovers. Csaba Somogyi played in goal in the National League, and Ádám Nagy played in a Carabao Cup game against FGR in 2021. Somogyi’s team Dartford managed to win, however, Bristol City got knocked out of the League Cup on penalties.
Players who helped Hungary’s qualification and have played in England
Three players are currently participating in the English football pyramid out of the squad that has qualified for Euro 2024. This summer, Dominik Szoboszlai was signed by Liverpool for €70 million and has been one of Jürgen Klopp’s favourites so far this season. Milos Kerkez currently plays for Bournemouth.
Down in League One, Callum Styles is currently playing for Barnsley. Although Styles was born in England, he is eligible to play for Hungary through his grandparents and made his debut in 2022.
Péter Gulácsi was absent for the second half of the campaign because of a lengthy injury, he formerly was on loan from Liverpool at Hereford, Tranmere Rovers, and Hull City. Centre midfielder Ádám Nagy played for Bristol City from 2019 to 2021.
Bendegúz Bolla has never made an appearance for Wolves, but he has a contract with the team and has been loaned out to the Swiss league this season. Loic Nego has spent a year on loan at Charlton Athletic in the 2014-15 season, as the London team have the same owner as 20-time Hungarian champion Újpest. However, Nego was still a French citizen at the time.
