‘I really did learn a lot from him’, Wolverhampton Wanderers manager discusses his history with Jose Mourinho and how he influenced him as both a player and a manager.
In 2002, midfielder Cesar Peixoto played in a game against Porto whilst playing for Boelenses, where he scored an impressive long range shot which caught the eyes of many, one being the newly signed Porto manager Jose Mourinho.
He went on to become one of the first summer signings for Porto, who, were promised by Mourinho they would soon become champions. He played under him for two years before Mourinho’s impressive collection of silverware caught the eyes of Chelsea who appointed him in 2004.
‘His winning mentality has stayed with me; we seemed to win everything under him.’
Peixoto joined Wolves this summer, replacing Rob Edwards after a disappointing premier league campaign seeing the side drop to the Championship.
However, after last nights victory against Bristol City, they are sat in second place only one point below leaders Middlesborough.
After retiring in 2014, Peixoto returned to the game five years later where he was appointed as manager of LigaPro side Varzim.
Discussing his transition into management he referred to his playing career under Mourinho, ‘We got to all the finals, we only lost two times, got to all the finals.’
‘That was the mentality that he brought, I learnt a lot from him as a player and as a coach now it has stuck with me.’
After a mixed start to the season, Wolves have seemed to find their form, unbeaten in four league games, the influence of Peixoto is proving to be the key to their comeback.
