After three years of chasing varsity victory against the University of Worcester, third year University of Gloucestershire Men’s Football centre-back Ben Brown, described the experience as being an “unbelievable moment, one I’m sure I’ll never forget.”
Reflecting on his time with UOG Men’s Football, Brown admitted that UOG’s 4-3 loss in his first year was a match they “probably should’ve won”, though Worcester were “deserved winners” in their second year triumph.
“This year we’ve had a really good campaign leading up into varsity and we’ve used that momentum coming into the game, and we dominated the game for a thoroughly deserved win.”
Gloucestershire secured a 1-0 victory over Worcester, with a 78th minute goal from Elijah McDonald securing the win for the home side at Bishops Cleeve Football Club.
During his time with the team the centre back formed a brilliant partnership with Captain Ben Weaver, a man who Brown described as a “great person on and off the pitch.”
“He’s a massive leader, he’s been our captain this year and has guided us to the treble in what has been a brilliant season.
To come through my entire university career alongside him has been unbelievable, and to round it off with a varsity victory is a special moment.”
Varsity wasn’t the only big victory for the squad after they won the treble, securing league and cup victories in their BUCS campaigns, rounding it off with the varsity win, achieving the first treble in the University’s history was an “unbelievable moment for the club.”
Despite Brown’s university and varsity career coming to an end, the sports journalism student is hopeful for the future of the team, after being “very lucky this year with the squad that we have.”
“We’ve got first and second years involved with the first team and I have full faith in them to carry on what we have achieved this year into next year.”
“Men’s football is only going one way,” and that way appears to be up, with the first team “playing at the highest standard that they have in a long time.”
