It’s that time of year once again as the annual Gloucestershire cheese rolling rolls around once again.
The event takes place at Coopers Hill on Monday, May 26th.
The event remains free, with the first race starting at midday.
For beginners, the rules of cheese rolling are simple: chase the cheese.
The 30kg cheese can roll down the hill at speeds of up to 80mph, the winner is the person who crosses the line first.
23-time champion Chris Anderson shares some advice for punters travelling to watch the event.
“I’d get here for 10:30 to grab a spot, if you get here just before 12:00 then you won’t get a space, if you don’t get a spot there’s a lower part of the hill where you can see the start, but you won’t be able to see who wins.”
Due to a hip injury sustained while running, Anderson won’t be able to add a 24th title to his collection this year.
Looking ahead to this year’s edition of the competition, there are some notable names Anderson has picked his potential competitors to keep an eye on.
“For the men’s races, I don’t know of anyone who’s running locally.
“There could potentially be two locals, Jamie Evans and Callum Shepherd. he won last year, and Jamie won the year before.
“They both potentially could be up here, but I’ve not heard anything to say that.
“For the women’s race, Abby from North Carolina, who’s won it twice, she’s coming back to compete again.
“So she wants that third win, and then I imagine if she wins this year, she’ll be back next year to try and match the women’s title.
“For people coming up, they can expect carnage, a great atmosphere, the atmosphere over here is electric, the crowd cheering, chanting.
“If the weather’s nice, it’ll be absolutely packed. It’s a great spectacle.”
It’s set to be another cracker down at Coopers Hill, and who knows who will take home the famous Gloucester cheese.
