Daf Williams – who is Gloucester City’s new manager?

Dafydd Williams’ appointment as Gloucester City AFC’s First Team Manager marks a new chapter in the club’s history.

At just 32 years old, the Welshman brings a blend of youthful energy as well as coaching experience in both the Football League and non-league system.

Williams is no stranger to the TigerTurf Stadium as he previously served as assistant manager under Lee Mansell during the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be back,” Williams told Gloucester City upon his appointment. “I know what this football club is about, having had a great experience here previously.

“It was a difficult decision to leave Newport County, but the opportunity to come to Gloucester City made it much easier. I’m really excited for the future.”

Williams’ coaching career started at the young age of 17, following a decision to transition from playing to coaching.

He honed his skills whilst working in the academies of Cardiff City and Swansea City, before taking on roles at Bristol Rovers, where he worked with the Under-18 and Under-21 squads.

Williams then moved positions to Barry Town United and eventually ended up at Newport County.

At The Exiles, Williams initially joined as a first-team coach under Graham Coughlan in July 2023.

He was later promoted to assistant head coach under Nelson Jardim for the 2024/25 season, but following Jardim’s departure, Williams took interim charge for the final two games of the season.

Williams’ return to Gloucester City is not just a homecoming, but in Chairman Colin Taylor’s view, a way to send the club back to the National League South after falling to AFC Totton in the play-off semi-final.

“When it became clear that Daf was interested, we didn’t hesitate to make the appointment. He is an ambitious manager and will bring the fresh approach we need.

“He has the full support of the board, and we hope the fans share our excitement and positivity for the coming season.”

Supporters have expressed optimism about Williams’ appointment, particularly his commitment to an attacking style of play and his familiarity with the club’s ethos.

Fans on forums have also welcomed his return, anticipating an attacking approach on the pitch.
