Bristol Rovers head coach Inigo Calderon hopes home advantage will help Gas return to their best: ‘It has to be a fortress’

Bristol Rovers head coach Inigo Calderon is focused on getting his side back to their “best” ahead of hosting Huddersfield Town in League One.

Rovers currently sit 20th in the league table after only one point in their last four matches which has included defeats to Wycombe, Northampton and Rotherham, as well as draw away at bottom of the league Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night.

On the other hand, Huddersfield Town are chasing a playoff spot come the end of the season, but despite sitting 6th have lost three of their last four games. They now have a favourable end to the season which features four of the bottom five.

“Obviously they’re having a good season,” Calderon said in his pre-match press conference. “The last games you can change whatever you want to but the season they’re having is good, obviously because when you have a big budget, usually it’s a bit easier to get that.

“But they’re having a good season. It’s going to be a really difficult game but I think we have [had] good games against good teams at home. For me, I don’t spend too much [time] about the opposition. Obviously, I want to know how they play, and how we can hurt them.

“But for me, it’s more us because, as I say, the last game against Rotherham, I think we were not our best and that’s what has to be our focus.”

Hopes of a move away from the relegation zone had come after wins at home to Peterborough and Burton Albion, but Calderon’s side are now embroiled again, only three points above the drop.

Promise Omochere had the best chance of the match at the Croud Meadow when his header needed clearing off the line, but there were scares late on which forced Ruel Sotiriou into a last-ditch tackle where he escaped red.

“Yeah, as I say, if we forget a little bit the last game against Rotherham, especially some of the spaces of the last game, I think at home we’ve been much better, and I think it has to be like that.

“I will try to use this time now to ask the fans for support because we are going to be there but I have to try, I have to ask them, ‘Please keep supporting us,’ especially because at home it has to be a fortress. It has to be difficult [for] all the teams to come.”
