“Go make a statement. Allow what we’re good at doing to happen”- Gavin Deane after UoG’s Women’s rugby’s 48-0 result over UWE

After a blinding victory over University of the West of England. University of Gloucestershire Head coach Coach Gavin Deane, was resolute over his teams performance.

“We looked after the ball going forward. We got the opportunities to expose a bit of space out wide. Kept it tight for a couple of phases, to then expand the ball.

“Players were on their feet to have a good blue on blue wall, to make it difficult. We kept the ball as long as we could and got it back just as quick.

“Kept the intensity high, and kept the pace of the game.”

After a solid half going up 26-0. Complacency is always a threat that can throw a team off pace and expose weaknesses.

Deane instilled the mindset of “Don’t allow our energy to dip. When our energy dips we allow the other team to get back into the game.

“Do the non-negotiable’s of working hard for each other, so nine times out of ten the performance and everything going on in the game will open up.”

Regardless of the resounding win, Deane has taken the stance on making improvements to his side. “Still some stuff to work on despite the 48-0. We have to continue to work on those things and keep ourselves grounded.

“With rugby it’s a really easy sport to live on the highs and get carried away. You can be brought back to earth very quickly.”

“It wasn’t an easy game in anyway shape or form. UWE had their moments of physicality where they brought the heat, and we had to absorb it.”

Now placed 4th in the league table after their win. The UoG women will play UWE once again in an away game.

However, the Gloucestershire based team are still under threat from the rest of the league.

“The league we’re in this year is really difficult. We’ve got Hartpury seconds, Cardiff Met seconds, Exeter seconds, UWE and USW. Three of those teams have got Super BUCS players.

“They also have got some international players. Some England under-20 players and some Welsh under-20 players.

“If we win more games then we lose then we’ll find ourselves in a really good place in the league.”
