University of Gloucestershire Womens Rugby player Amy Boswell looks ahead to Varsity 2024

University of Gloucestershire Womens Rugby forward Amy Boswell shares her thoughts ahead of UOG’s varsity clash with the University of Worcester.

Varsity is what every university sports team looks forward to every year, to clash with their rivals in an attempt to bring glory home to their respective university and for the players it is the most important time of their season.

“Varsity means a lot to me, from my first year in uni to now in my fourth year it has always been a big moment in the season.”

“I feel like it’s the last celebration for all the girls, especially because your team is always changing every year, you get that one last game as that squad before the new first years arrive. I just think varsity is so important.”

Varsity is not played at the normal, small-sized venues the girls play at week in week out but instead, the teams take to the pitch in front of much bigger crowds, notably at Six Ways Stadium in Worcester.

“I think it was quite daunting when I played my first varsity at Six Ways but when it got to my final one I guess it was quite emotional because it’s such a different environment to what you’re normally used to in the league that when you get that big moment to play in the stadium it does add a bit more pressure.”

“I think as long as the team is well adapted to it, it’s quite an enjoyable experience and it puts more value into varisty.”

Boswell highlighted some of her most memorable and favourite moments from varsity over the years.

“One of my favourites was definitely in my first year as we won at Six Ways, that was incredible and a great memory.”

“Also last years varsity, when I was in my third year, I think it meant a lot to me as I thought that was going to be my last game with the girls but obviously it ended up not being that way.”

“I think that meant so much as like I said it’s the last time you get to play as a whole squad with all your mates that you’ve played with since the start.”

Ahead of this years clash, Boswell shared her thoughts on how it may pan out.

“I think we have a good chance of winning this year, we have a completely new squad with some really exciting players.”

“I think now we have entered our training for varsity the girls have really stepped it up even though we haven’t had the most amazing season.”

“I think we do have a really good chance looking at how Worcester have been playing this season, we should be in for a win I hope.”
