OPINION: Thoughts on Gary Caldwell, recent form and January Transfer targets

Gary Caldwell has been in charge of the Grecians for 60 games after the departure of Matt Taylor in October 2022.

Exeter had a good start to the season and went top of the league after a win against Cheltenham Town on September 16th 2023, since then Caldwell’s side have not won a game in the league since and have also struggled to find the back of the net – two goals in past 12 league games is a very worrying stat for all fans of Exeter City and they have certainly let the players and Caldwell know by sending them off at full time with a loud scurry of boos. It goes without saying that recent form has been the cause of the drop in attendances.

It has been a tough few months for Caldwell and I do have a level of sympathy for him mainly due to the injury concerns at the club. But the way of football being played is not at the standard needed for this football club.

Caldwell started his role at Exeter tremendously and kept the Grecians mid table in their first season back in league one finishing 14th.

In the past few months the performances have been unacceptable and there has been no sense of any change either. The only real sight of change has been Chieck Diabate leading the line up front. Diabate is a centre back who is visablly a solid, strong defender – not a striker.

The club wont sack him, as it seems they can’t afford too. It frustrates the supporters, the pride they all have in this club being fan owned and there is members of the board that some supporters aren’t happy with which is causing a lot of tension and anger within the club.

The safest option for the club to do is to relieve Gary of his duties and start recruitment process now so we can have a fresh start in the new year and sign players we need to when the window opens in January.

It does make me question what the board are doing at the moment, any other club who goes 12 league games without winning a game will most likely part ways with their manager so fans are questioning and furious aswell.

A striker is a must for the Grecians and a defender is also an option we will need to look at.

JANUARY TARGETS:

Louis Flower – Brighton & Hove Albion

Flower is a young quick striker who can find the back of the net. He would be a great addition to the squad and playing alongside James Scott would provide a new style of play for Exeter, with Scott’s hold up play taking advantage and Flower utilising his pace in behind opposing defences.
