Adam Harper from Tewkesbury boxed Ryan Kelly in a Super Welterweight clash on the undercard of Kal Yafai’s defence for his WBA World title against Japanese boxer Suguru Maranaka at the Barclaycard Arena, Birmingham.
There was a heated build up before the two men fought it out over 10 rounds. Kelly a Birmingham City fan and Harper an Aston Villa fan, tempers threatened to flare at the weigh in setting up a fiery affair when both men got in the ring.
The now 8-0 boxer started the fight on the front foot boxing well behind the jab, firing combos effectively.
Kelly looked to work the body continuously looking for a right or left hook to the body, but Harper proved tough and evaded and defended well from the Birmingham man’s onslaught in the opening rounds.
A fight where a lot of pride was on the line, Harper looked the fierier and who generally throughout looked like he had more intent to win.
Credit must be given where credit’s due for Kelly, who boxed well throughout the fight but as he stated after the fight felt he started going through the motions too late.
After 10 rounds of complete war, the judge’s scorecard showed 97-95 in favour of the 29-year-old Harper.
In utter jubilation he claimed how he has proved all doubters wrong and immediately asked promoter Eddie Hearn to sign him up with Matchroom.
